The Race for Hot Talent
Job Deciding Factors of Top Performers
The race to attain and retain hot talent has always been difficult despite the economy. It is always easier to recruit and retain within the larger pool of B talent than the handful of top "A performers."
"The tables are turning from the unemployment spike of the recession to a long-term talent shortage that will dominate business priorities for the years ahead," says Gabriel Bouchard, President of Workopolis.
No longer can we just post a job advertisement and expect to hire from the litter. As recruiters, we are expected from our clients to attain the top talent. For the top performers, they have become increasingly selective when finding their next employer. Top talents are continually being headhunted and they are ready to negotiate, they know what they are worth and how much they can get.
According to a research conducted by Career Builder of over 4800 employed workers in March 2010, their deciding factors of an employer are:
Other Deciding Factors Include:
Good work life balance includes location, the attraction of the location, commute time. Am I going to be tied to my work 12 hours a day, how is my family going to be affected? Are there a lot of travel involved?
Company reputation, there are always companies with a bad reputation, company culture, work culture, reputation of the direct report etc. On the rare occasion we are forced to turn down a client due to their dodgy past or bad reputation.
Career advancement, self /career development and title is another deciding factor. When a candidate is a director of operations and you offer a position with the same duties but at a lower title, you can bet it would be part of the negotiation that the title be changed.
Retaining top employers can be a challenge, especially when employers prefer candidates who are already employed. When we are recruiting for a hard to fill position the best candidates are almost always employed and most likely, they have already been contacted by their competitors.
In a survey of Canadian Human Resources professionals by Workopolis titled "The Talent Hunt Decade Begins":
- 97% of respondents said they want tools to help them reach employed candidates.
- 75% said it was particularly critical to get in touch with individuals who aren’t actively looking for a new
The race for hot talent has already begun, whether you win the race will depend on how you market and manage your recruitment message and keep current of what hot talents really want.
