    Here are our 5 recommendations:

    1. Add trigger words – finding key phrases

Resumes need to be relevant to the position. By incorporating key phrases found in the job posting, you are increasing the relevance and relatability of your resume.

    Sales Manager Job posting

Here are some examples of key phrases found in the Sales Manager posting:

Key phrase 1: “B2B distributor of warehousing, packaging, supplies and equipment”

What you need to do: Add these terms in the description of your previous employers.

Example: company is a B2B distributor of office equipment.

Key Phrase 2: “managing 6-10 outside sales people...hiring, training, performance improvement, territory and account optimization and administration”

What you need to do: Elaborate on your management experience.

  • How many people did you manage?
  • Did you hire, train etc.?
  • What type of sales team did you supervise?  (Are they outside or inside sales people?)
  • How did the results of your management abilities improve the company’s performance?

    2. It is all about the numbers

This is a must use tip for all sales professionals, add your sales numbers. Numbers are indisputable evidence of your success.

There is a good attempt to incorporate numbers in this resume, but there are figures that do not have any context and as such fails to convey what your part was in the success.

    sales numbers and context

For example, “$1.2 million in annual sales”, is this just you alone or company’s total sales?

What you need to do: Give some background information on how you reached this number.

  • What did you do? (Sales tactics, marketing programs, etc.)
  • Was this achieved on your own or as part of a team?
  • Does this reflect growth versus the previous year/s?
  • If so, by how much?

Make sure your numbers are correct Incorrect Sales Numbers

This only equates to a 37% increase.

    3. Organize your Layout

By re-organizing the layout of your resume, you will make sure we read what you want us to know. No resumes are fully read from beginning to end, you have 30 seconds to convey that you are a qualified candidate.

    What you need to do:

  • Avoid using blocks of texts, use bullet points. There are some great achievements throughout your resume but they were lost in the dense text.
  • Use headings and format them to make them stand out.
  • It is good that you have outlined your achievements but it will be easier for the reader to understand how these successes came about if they were under each job title.
  • Use consistent formatting throughout your resume. When you bold and italicized one heading, it needs to be consistent throughout your document otherwise it looks careless and disorganized.

    4. Use of Pictures

People may attach images to their resume to add personality.

Unfortunately, instead of the picture it reads “X blocked content, Warning”. Be cautious when you are adding an image. Most email spam filters block out pictures.

    What you need to do:

Take it out! It has no relevancy to the job posting. If you believe it is absolutely necessary to add an image, save your resume in PDF format to maintain formatting styles.

    5. Cut out the unnecessary

    profile too long

Wow, this profile is long. There are 11 commas in a sentence that is longer than any other paragraph found in your resume.

    What you need to do:

  • Use a maximum of 3 bullet points to highlight your profile.
  • Avoid using generic phrases like “increasing revenues, "goal oriented". If you do, make sure to highlight your examples throughout the resume.

This has always and will continue to be the most important tip, check your spelling and grammar. There are a few spelling mistakes throughout the resume.
