June 21st is the official first day of summer and the long-awaited months of sun and warm weather are finally here!

The reality is that many of us will be spending our summer inside, working. But that doesn’t mean summer can’t be enjoyed while at work! Here are a few ideas for boosting morale in the office while taking advantage of the sunny season.

Company BBQ Lunch

Invest in a company barbecue and plan a lunch outside the office on a sunny day during the week. Get employees involved by having everyone each bring in buns, hot dogs, beverages, etc. Bring in a game, such as a bocci ball set to get some friendly competition going! A cookout gives everyone a chance to get away from their desk and soak up some sun while socializing with colleagues.

Flexible Summer Hour

Depending on the industry, summer months may be the busiest of the year, which can make implementing shorter summer hours easier said than done. However, with a little strategy and planning, a few concessions to the work schedule can make a positive impact on your employee morale. For example, you could try alternating schedules so that each employee has a turn to leave an hour or two earlier on Fridays.

Wellness Contest

Summer is the perfect time to begin a workplace wellness initiative, as the warm weather encourages people to get outdoors more often for exercise. Encourage a healthy lifestyle by starting a wellness or fitness contest at your office. It could be something as simple as a step count competition – whoever logs the most steps over the summer wins! Keeping steps is easier than ever before with devices like Fitbit, and even most smartphones automatically log steps.
