Changing jobs is a lot more commonplace than it was in previous generations. Growing along with the rise of millennials in the workforce is the trend to change jobs every 3-4 years. Even so, deciding to leave your current role is a big decision that can impact your career development.

So how to determine when it is the right time to move on? Start by asking yourself the following questions:

What is Driving You to Leave?

Taking a hard look at why you want to leave can help you decide if resigning is really the best choice for your career, or if you should rework the situation you’re already in. If there is simply no more room for growth at your current job, or you want to take your career in a completely different direction, then it may be time to hand in your two weeks notice.

But if the reason centres around something like compensation, or workload (not enough or too much), the problem might be fixable without leaving, which brings us to the next question:

Have You Tried to Improve the Situation?

It’s hard for your employer to fix a problem they don’t know about! Telling your boss that you’re unhappy at your job may seem risky, but it doesn’t have to be. Request a one-on-one meeting with your manager and concisely tell them what your goals are – and what’s preventing you from achieving them – without implying that you’re thinking about leaving. If they can’t or won’t help, then it is likely a sign to start searching for greener pastures at another company.

What are the Pros and Cons of Leaving?

It can be easy to let one factor of a job – like compensation –  sway your decision to go or stay. But there are many other factors, such as opportunity for advancement, commuting time, and work culture, that should be a part of your decision-making process.  Weighing all the pros and cons before resigning will help prevent you from making a hasty decision you later regret.


In an age where job-hopping is the norm, it’s important to remember that sometimes the grass isn’t greener on the other side. Careful consideration before leaving your job can go a long way in preventing resigner’s remorse and ensuring that your career resume shows commitment and good judgement.
