The B.C. government is paying out more money to top executives, according to figures released by the province Monday.
It is the second year in a row the provincial government has released "the major elements of compensation for the top ranking/paid public sector executives in British Columbia," according to a news release.
Salaries included in the disclosed numbers for compensation in 2008 include: - Ida Goodreau, former CEO of Vancouver Coastal Health, $366,621.
- Dr. Nigel Murray, CEO of Fraser Health $466,176.
- Kevin Mahoney, CEO of BC Rail $494,182.
- Warren Buckley, CEO of B.C. Pavilion Corporation $597,438.
The online compensation listing includes base salary, benefits (including taxable benefits), employer pension contributions, and performance payments.
Maureen Baderm British Columbia director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, said the salaries are out of line.
"The average salary in B.C. is only about $42,000 a year, and average family incomes are only about $85,000 a year and yet we're supporting these massive, massive salary levels."
Henry Goldbeck, founder and CEO of Goldbeck Recruiting, argues the province has to pay high salary levels if it wants to keep top talent in the public sector.
He said to keep people in a position, they are going to look at compensation in addition to job satisfaction.
"They need to be within shouting distance of market value to have good people in the position," said Goldbeck.
