Keys to Recruitment Success in Northern BC
Having an unsuccessful placement is really hard for all parties; the company, the recruiter and the candidate. There can be countless of factors and situations that lead to this but at the end of the day you have to make the most out of it. If there is any learning, insight that can be obtained from it, that is the first thing that all parties should be doing moving forward. Biases may come, more stringent parameters may sometimes follow depending on the situation, and other times it may be smarter to take a step back get a fresh look at things and probably be a bit more creative and open to other options to get a successful candidate fast. You may have to give up some things.
People are never static
A recruiter may find a candidate that has all your requirements to the T, but if the potential candidates are not interested with your opportunity let alone consider any career move at that time, then it doesn’t matter. Even if they show interest initially, things can change as you go through the process, for example, a personal event in their life happens that may not allow them to make a move. We are dealing with people, it is never a static thing and you just have to do your best to anticipate and think 10-20-30 steps ahead.
Key to overcoming recruitment challenges in a small town
My client is a large Pulp company in a town in Northern BC. They have been unsuccessfully recruiting for a Project Manager. With a population of around 10,000 you can expect a significant portion of their workforce to be from out of town. Their first hire quickly moved on. There is always a risk of relocating somebody and when they don’t really have a strong anchor on the community or they don’t get to develop that during the time they are there, the chances of them leaving is high if they get another good opportunity somewhere else.
The 2nd time around my client was more flexible with their requirements and was open to considering somebody without direct pulp and paper experience. The technical background knowledge is certainly a big help to assume this role. Then again how long can you wait to find the perfect candidate that will fit your budget and have high chances of staying with you long term? Be open to candidates that upon first look might now be your ideal fit. Integral to the success of recruiting any role and in any location is to always keep an eye out for potential opportunities, candidates that upon first glance might not be an ideal fit but, has the skill and potential.
Find out their motivation for relocating
Money can certainly be a huge motivator for anybody. It helps but it is not the most important thing. For the two candidates I placed for this client of mine, both took a pay cut to get to this job. The first guy’s motivation is to get work life balance, and the 2nd guy was again for personal reasons – he wanted to get close to his parents.
He and his wife have a young child, even more reason to be closer to his parents and go back to his home town. Although he was not your ideal candidate on paper this became a huge factor for him to get the job as it is reducing the risk for them relocating people who end up moving again in the not too distant future. He certainly displayed the high sense of professionalism, leadership and portable skills that we were looking for. I saw huge potential that was why I pushed for him with my client.
