Our client is a well-established family business with a large group of companies and assets in Canada and the US. This position will report to the VP Finance & Operations. This position will be responsible for a subsidiary manufacturing company.

The Controller is responsible for providing financial analysis, support and planning models in conjunction with operating plans for three businesses in Canada and the US. The analysis and translation of financial information tells a story that helps senior management understand its importance and buy-in to the business plan. As a business partner, the incumbent will provide insights and recommendations to senior management in order to make impactful business decisions. The Controller will be responsible for gathering, compiling and summarizing the right information in a fast pace, start-up environment, leveraging data to drive insight, and providing business planning, analysis and reporting. In addition, the incumbent is responsible for full-cycle accounting and producing monthly financials.

The office is in downtown Vancouver and parking is provided.

Responsibilities:

  • Collect, analyze, and interpret financial information based on market trends, business objectives, internal and external drivers, and investment options impacting performance.
  • Work with senior management to develop multi-year financial forecasts and budgets, including full P&L, cash flow, and balance sheet.
  • Produce accurate and consistent financial reporting and provide recommendations for action to the internal leadership team, external stakeholders, ownership, and the Board.
  • Provide creative alternatives and recommendations to senior management for improvements that will lead to risk reduction, cost reduction, revenue generation, improved financial performance, and streamlined operations.
  • Liaise with operations management to provide timely, accurate financial analysis for ad hoc optimization studies or ongoing margin analysis by product line.
  • Keep track of monthly and quarterly performance by comparing actuals versus expectations and enabling senior management to better use their resources.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners in Accounting and Operations to execute against plans.
  • Oversee the Senior Accountants, Junior Accountants, Account Payable, and Accounts Receivable functions.
  • Ensure all key balance sheet account schedules, including detailed fixed asset, mortgage amortization, prepaid, deferrals, and investments, are properly maintained, updated, and reconciled on a monthly basis.
  • Assist with cost accounting and inventory tracking.
  • Assist operations to evaluate, establish and implement business process improvements.
  • Prepare interim and year-end audit working papers and audited financial statements for external auditors.
  • Manage company insurance, and alcohol compliance reporting, and work with internal tax teams on necessary reporting.

Qualifications:

  • CPA designation
  • The ideal candidate will have Manager level audit experience in a top accounting firm plus industry experience.
  • Minimum of five years of management experience
  • Experience with complex budgets, forecasting, internal transactions, and executive presentations
  • Experience with process analysis and improvement
  • Superior attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Extensive computer knowledge including Excel.
  • Strong leadership skills to coach mentor and develop a team.
  • Adaptable and flexible to shift focus to support decisions and plans.
  • Ability to handle conflicting deadlines and prioritize.
  • Ability to professionally liaise with high-profile clientele.
  • Ability to roll up sleeves and support staff with day-to-day as needed.
  • Team player with a positive attitude
  • Manufacturing industry experience is a plus.
