Our client is a well-established group of private companies in the transportation industry.  They are looking for a Controller to join their team.  Current Controller will retire this year.   Great opportunity to collaborate with management team and support decisions.  Reporting to the CFO you will manage a six-person accounting team.

 

Responsibilities:

Corporate Finance – reviews and approves in collaboration with CFO the following:

  • Monthly Financial Reporting Package and Cash Flow statements
  • Quarterly reporting to financial institutions
  • Annual Budget, Capital Acquisition Package
  • Prepares annual financial working papers for all companies
  • Reviews and approves coding of administrative purchases and signing cheques
  • Reviews and approves quarterly reconciliations.

Manage day to day Operations of Accounting

  • Monitors and enforces internal controls, banking procedures for all companies
  • Monitors and enforces internal controls for TMS software in conjunction with Network Administrator
  • Evaluates, mentors and coaches, department staff to help develop skills to meet corporate, service, and individual developmental needs
  • Review A/R adjustments and rebills, property billing and misc billing, approves account changes
  • Reviews, approves, and assigns credit terms on all A/R credit applications
  • Works with shop department to ensure A/P procedures followed and fuel inventory monitoring
  • Performs electronic fuel remittances for all companies
  • Controls the distribution of fuel cards and ferry cards
  • Prepares GST, PST, Corporate Tax installments and misc payables for all companies
  • Prepares special reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends.
  • Increases departmental support through effective cross training
  • Manages implementation of new accounting programs in conjunction with Network Administrator
  • Renews and approves lease operator payments for all companies
  • Supports AP for holiday relief
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Insurance

  • Reviews potential loss exposure and deals with each exposure: fleet, property and cargo insurance
  • Monitors agent L/OP and Outside Cartage insurance requirements
  • Maintains insurance spreadsheet

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Business Administration
  • CPA designation
  • 5 years of experience in related role
  • Supervisory experience
  • Transportation industry is beneficial
  • Excellent organizational, customer service and communication skills
  • Strong analytical, trouble shooting and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to maintain a flexible and positive approach under pressure
  • Ability to think and act strategically
  • Experience working in a unionized environment is a plus.
