Our client is a leading Canadian manufacturer of mechanical and electronic products used in a variety of industries such as mining, aerospace, oil & gas, energy, etc.

They are currently in need of a Senior Mechanical Engineer/Designer who will be responsible for developing innovative solutions to meet the requirements and customer needs. Responsibilities include development of initial concepts, selection of mechanical hardware and related components, sealing strategy, test plans and procedures, evaluating performance, incorporating all regulatory requirements while keeping scalability and future-proofing in mind.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for design, material, and component selection for cost effective and reliable products to meet customer/internal requirements.
  • Create/maintain/verify BoMs, component specifications, and component libraries.
  • Create/update detailed designs of mechanical components evolving them into a prototype and/or production ready product.
  • Use SolidWorks to prepare 3D models and 2D drawings while adhering to precedent and recognized methods.
  • Use FEA (SolidWorks Simulation) to optimize the mechanical design considering strength, cost, and size trade offs.
  • Write design specifications, project scopes/requirements, and test documents.
  • Build or define engineering and production test equipment, including ATE (Automated Test Equipment)
  • Test and troubleshoot prototypes, including ALT (Accelerated Life Test)
  • Resolve safety and regulatory approval issues for CE, CSA, FCC, etc.
  • Perform feasibility studies, cost analyses, and simulations as required to assess the technical and economic viability of the concepts.
  • Consider DFMA (Design for Manufacturability and Assembly) in all areas with a view to creating a volume production, high yield product while maintaining reliability.
  • Create tolerance stacks to determine the product can be assembled and will perform as intended when produced in production with all variations considered.
  • Perform or consider FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis)
  • Use analysis and/or simulation to evaluate design options to meet performance, reliability and regulatory criteria.
  • Work with multidisciplinary teams (Mechanical, Electrical, Software, Sales, Marketing, Production, QA, etc.) to innovate new products and resolve customer issues.
  • Liaise and work collaboratively with external partners, suppliers, manufacturing and customers/representative to optimize the overall design and support/resolve design issues.
  • Perform/Support failure analysis of field returns and production failures.
  • Create new designs and supports existing designs and projects.
  • Contribute to and follow the Product Development Process.
  • Manages projects.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent.
  • Eligible for or registered as a professional engineer in a relevant field is an asset.
  • Additional manufacturing process certifications considered an asset (Lean, Six Sigma, ASQ etc.).
  • SolidWorks and PDM Expert and Professional accreditation, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant design experience of mechanical designs and product packaging for a manufacturing environment.
  • Knowledge of engineering principles in Statics and Strength of Materials and machinery design.
  • Knowledge of Heat Transfer and Thermal Dynamics is an asset.
  • Experienced in using SolidWorks, PDM, and SolidWorks Simulation. Familiar with GD&T drawing practices.
  • Knowledge of CNC milling & Lathe, metal forming, welding, die-casting, fabrication and injection molding processes and their requirements.
  • Knowledge of enclosure materials used in the electronics industry and their advantages and drawbacks is a distinct advantage.
  • Knowledge of mechanical manufacturing processes and the associated requirements/constraints on design is a distinct advantage.
  • Familiar with electronics disciplines related to mechanical design.
  • Familiar with DFM (Design for Manufacturability) and DFT (Design for Test) requirements.
  • Knowledge of ALT (Accelerated Life Test), environmental testing and the associated design requirements is an asset.
  • Solid interpersonal skills are required to function appropriately in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to think through concepts quickly in the initial concept stage.
  • Fast learning, detail oriented, procedural in workflow, aptitude for accuracy.
  • Ability to prioritize issues, manage multiple tasks, and estimate/meet target completion dates.
  • Able to estimate parts and product costs.
  • Familiar with engineering documentation processes in a manufacturing environment such as PLM (Product Life Cycle Management), Change Management, and ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning).
