Our client is an engineering company specializing in fire, life safety and building code consulting. Their corporate mission is to carry on and expand our business as a consulting engineering firm specializing in building code consulting and fire protection engineering design and to be fully trained and qualified to interpret and apply the principles of fire, life safety and building code regulations and standards in order to protect and lifeguard society from loss or damage. The Company’s mission is to provide knowledge, experience and results to their clients.

We are seeking to fill a full-time employment opportunity for an experienced Engineer with a knowledge base in Part 3 – Fire Protection, Occupant Safety and Accessibility of the Vancouver Building By-law and the B.C. Building Code and Part 9 – Small Buildings and other relevant standards relating to building code consulting. A minimum of 2 years experience in Part 3 and Part 9 will be required.

The Company manages all of its projects on a project team basis and as such, the employee will become an integral member of project team(s) assigned to project(s). The successful candidate will be required to be responsible for the management of projects, client communication, internal resource allocation and prioritization of work flow. As the assigned responsible project engineer and/or project leader, you will be required to professionally seal and sign code documentation and issue professional Letters of Assurance as mandated by the British Columbia Building Code and Vancouver Building By-law.

The components of the job description are as follows:

  • Working as a member of a project teams and completing project tasks assigned by a Senior Project Engineer and Senior Management.
  • Reviewing architectural and design team consultants drawings for building code conformance.
  • Developing concepts for achieving life safety and fire protection measures on a wide category of buildings. Developed concepts will be based on life safety infrastructure requirements, use and occupancy of building and categories of buildings as defined in the B.C. Building Code and the Vancouver Building By-law, Part .3
  • Prepare building code and technical reports for building types, configurations, sizes and construction requirements.
  • Assisting the senior Certified Professional (CP) project engineer(s) with the preparation of certified professional building permit applications including the preparation of code compliance drawings, code reports, ADS reports, coordination and collection of all documentation required for the permitting process and application.
  • Attendance at project design team meetings with the Coordinating Registered Professional (Architect) and the sub-consultants retained by the client to provide building code overview, construction and occupancy phase services for projects.
  • Attendance at meetings with the Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) to present the proposed building concepts/reports and negotiate with the AHJ to gain approval of the code reports and building code concepts.
  • Performing shop drawing reviews, site inspections and related field review services to ensure correct construction installation of building code concepts and agreements established and approved by municipal authorities.
  • Coordination with clients and design team consultants to ensure client satisfaction and project milestones are achieved.
  • Reviewing Requests for Proposal for code conformance and compliance to determine the technical parameters of the project. Once the review is completed, the proposal will be issued by the general manager for presentation and acceptance by the potential client.

The potential candidate will be required to complete a building code questionnaire demonstrating knowledge level and application of the Vancouver Building Bylaw and the British Columbia
